Volunteer

If you enjoy meeting new people, interested in heritage and keen to get some skills on your CV, why not consider volunteering with the Cornwall’s Maritime Churches project. You’ll have the opportunity to benefit from complimentary talks, lectures and events, whilst receiving mentoring from academics, heritage and film professionals.

We’re looking for Volunteers between the ages of 16 to 25, to join our team – working together to ensure our young roots digital project successfully unearths a new subject area – Maritime Church history. Whether you can spare a few hours a week or a month, we would love to hear from you. Select from our list of volunteer roles below.

Researcher

As a researcher, you’ll be leading on maritime church history, searching for those narratives with the help of primary and secondary sources. You’ll also be encouraged to contribute to the National Maritime Museum’s online journal ‘TROZE’, the Institute of Cornish Studies’ online journal ‘Cornish Story’ and the Cornish Studies journal of essays.

Oral History practitioner

Get to know local Cornish communities by attending memory events held at each church. Learn how to use recording equipment, interview according to Cornish Audio Visual Archive guidelines and edit memories for online soundbites. Like researchers, you’ll be encouraged to write up your findings of ‘memory and place’ for established online and print journals.

Photographers

Capture the community, the church and its unique connection to the sea by becoming a project photographer. You will be imperative to documenting the behind the scenes of the project and in storytelling each community’s maritime history. Your work will be exhibited on our online image library and used across the project’s online channels, as well as third party platforms such as Google Arts and Culture.

Film makers

Learn how to write, direct and film a history documentary. You will receive specialist mentoring with a Cornish production company, use of professional equipment and skills in editing. Working in a small team, you will create a film for online consumption.

Marketing and Press officers

From designing a social media strategy to printed literature, lead our project’s marketing and press. Working in a small group, enhance your skills in digital and communications marketing within the heritage sphere. You will benefit from working with a variety of heritage and broadcasting organisations, whilst being mentored by a marketing professional from the National Trust.
